DST–ICAR Watershed Development Programme

SpatiEdge  executed the DST–ICAR Watershed Development Programme to support sustainable water and land management in Odisha. The project generated accurate geospatial datasets and analytical layers to enable scientific watershed planning, soil and water conservation, and climate-resilient agricultural practices.

SpatiEdge two Decades Experience

SpatiEdge draws its foundation from professional participation in the execution of large-scale, flagship geospatial mission projects, contributing to survey integration, GIS database development, and decision-ready spatial outputs for government programmes.

Project Overview

The DST–ICAR Watershed Development Programme was executed by SpatiEdge Technologies Pvt. Ltd. to strengthen sustainable water and land management practices in Odisha. The project focused on generating accurate spatial datasets and analytical layers to support watershed planning, soil and water conservation, and climate-resilient agricultural practices.

Client / Stakeholders

  • Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India

  • Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)

Project Objectives

  • Enable scientific watershed planning using geospatial tools

  • Improve water conservation and soil management strategies

  • Support data-driven agricultural decision-making

  • Identify priority zones for water harvesting, recharge structures, and soil conservation

Scope of Work

  • Delineation of macro and micro-watersheds using high-resolution satellite imagery

  • Extraction of drainage networks and stream ordering analysis

  • Digital Elevation Model (DEM) based slope, terrain, and runoff analysis

  • Identification of potential sites for check dams, water harvesting, and recharge structures

  • Integration of DGPS-based ground truth data with GIS layers

Methodology & Technical Approach

SpatiEdge applied a combination of remote sensing, DEM-based hydrological modeling, and field verification to ensure accuracy of watershed boundaries and intervention sites. GIS layers were structured to represent watersheds, drainage, and topography for actionable planning.

Technologies & Tools

  • Remote Sensing Analysis

  • GIS Platforms (ArcGIS / QGIS)

  • DGPS Ground Surveys

  • DEM and Hydrological Modeling

Key Deliverables

  • Watershed and micro-watershed maps

  • Hydrological and terrain analysis layers

  • GIS-ready datasets for planning agencies

  • Reports supporting sustainable watershed management

Impact & Outcomes

  • Enhanced scientific basis for watershed interventions

  • Improved water resource and soil conservation planning

  • Strengthened climate-resilient agricultural practices

  • Long-term support for sustainable rural development
